Fort San Lorenzo is a UNESCO World Heritage Spanish colonial fortress perched on a dramatic cliff above the mouth of the Chagres River where it meets the Caribbean Sea. Built in 1597 to protect the gold route between Portobelo and Panama Viejo, the fort was attacked and rebuilt multiple times, including the famous assault by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671. Today visitors can explore its beautifully restored barrel-vaulted brick tunnels, underground chambers, the domed chapel, and sentry watchtowers with breathtaking views over the river and sea. The fort grounds host centuries-old trees covered in bromeliads and epiphytic ferns, and the location offers a privileged perspective where tropical jungle meets the Caribbean.
