Snorkeling & Diving
Panama's Caribbean coast has some of the best-preserved coral reefs in Central America. Right off Playa Escondida you'll find excellent snorkeling with tropical fish, starfish, and soft corals. For certified diving, there are dive centers in Portobelo offering dives to deep reefs and Spanish shipwreck sites. We recommend morning dives when visibility is best.
History & Culture
Portobelo was one of the most important ports of the Spanish Empire — gold and silver-laden galleons arrived here. The fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most accessible in Central America. You can also visit an Emberá community — an indigenous people who maintain their ancestral traditions. The tour includes a pirogue river journey, traditional dances, crafts, and a typical lunch ($60-80 pp).
