El Valle Orchid Festival

The El Valle de Antón Orchid Festival is an annual event celebrating one of the largest concentrations of wild orchids in the Americas, in the only inhabited town inside a volcanic crater. Held in October, the festival attracts botanists, collectors, and nature lovers from around the world to admire the incredible diversity of over 100 orchid species growing in this unique microclimate at 600 meters elevation. The event includes spectacular exhibitions of rare orchids (including the famous Holy Ghost orchid, Panama's national flower), cultivation competitions where experts demonstrate reproduction and care techniques, guided hikes through crater trails to see orchids in their natural habitat, an artisanal market with local products and indigenous crafts, and educational talks on botanical conservation. It's a perfect excursion from Buenaventura, just 45 minutes away, combining nature, culture, and mountain dining at restaurants like La Casa de Lourdes.
